Mumbai Indians (MI) got off to a rollicking start in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 game against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Sunday afternoon. Ryan Rickelton, who has been called out for not converting his starts with the bat, showed his full range of shots in front of a packed Wankhede Stadium.
On the fourth ball of the second over of the game bowled by Prince Yadav, Rickelton had Rohit Sharma ducking for cover. The South African batter hit a powerful shot straight down the ground which sped to the fence for a boundary. Rohit, who was standing at the non-striker’s end, saw the shot from Rickelton nearly take his head off. If Rohit hadn’t ducked in time, it would have injured him.
LSG skipper Rishabh Pant won the toss and chose to bowl and saw MI race to 66 for one after six overs. Mayank Yadav was given his first game of IPL 2025 as he replaced Shardul Thakur in the playing XI. For the home team Corbin Bosch made his debut while Karn Sharma was given his recall. The duo replaced Mitchell Santner and Vignesh Puthur in their playing XI.
Rohit Sharma departs early after scoring 12 runs
Mayank Yadav bowled the first over of the innings and gave away just six runs, which included one four. Prince Yadav saw Rickelton climb into a short ball and deposit the ball deep into the stands for a huge six. This was followed by two successive fours, with one of them nearly cleaning up Rohit Sharma.
The former MI skipper faced his first ball and was dished out a short ball by Mayank and Rohit hit for a six. The second ball saw the same treatment being meted out to the bowler. In the end, Mayank had the last laugh when he bowled a slower ball that Rohit tried to reach but only got a bottom edge of and was caught by Prince Yadav at the short third-man region.
The final over before the powerplay was bowled by Digvesh Rathi, who conceded 19 runs. Rickelton hit two sixes and a four to help MI end their powerplay on a high. The left-handed batter eventually reached his fifty on the first ball of the seventh over. Rickelton got to his fifty off 25 balls, which was the fastest by an MI batter in IPL 2025.
