Rory Burns made a blunder while performing wicket-keeping duties for Surrey in their T20 Blast 2024 quarterfinal match against Durham. A moment of carelessness from Burns gifted a lifeline to Michael Jones, who helped Durham reach a competitive total after being invited to bat first at London's Oval on Tuesday (September 3).

Daniel Worrall provided a dream start for Surrey in the crucial encounter by dismissing opener Graham Clark for a four-ball duck. Wickets kept falling and Durham found themselves reeling at 69-6 in the 13th over. When it looked like a collapse was imminent, Bas de Leede and Jones began to stabilize the innings for Durham.

Meanwhile, a brilliant fielding effort by Will Jacks in the 15th over almost ensured a wicket for Surrey. De Leede nudged a wide yorker to cover and Jacks, who made a stunning stop, fired a throw towards the striker’s end. Realising it was a routine runout, Burns paid little attention, leading to a comedy of errors.

Failing to collect the ball, all he could do was hit the stumps with his gloves. By the time the English cricketer rushed to grab the ball, Jones safely dived back into the crease.

Dominic Sibley and Sam Curran take Surrey to semi-final

Burns and Surrey were made to pay the price for missing a golden opportunity as de Leede and Jones added life to Durham’s innings. Later, Ben Raine’s quick-fire knock (23 off 8 balls) helped Durham reach a competitive score of 162.

Chasing 163, Surrey did not have a great start as they lost two wickets in quick succession. With Burns continued his misery with the bat, Surrey were three down in the seventh over. However, half-centuries from Dominic Sibley and Sam Curran helped their side reach the semi-finals with a five-wicket win.
