Indian spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar picked 9 wickets to bowl New Zealand for 235 in their first innings. Rohit Sharma would have been happy with the effort as the Kiwis were coasting at 159/3 at one stage. The last seven wickets fell for a mere 76 runs as the home team came back into the contest.

Washington Sundar was bowling round the wicket to Daryl Mitchell who was batting on 82. The Kiwi batter had batted well and braved the odds as far as the weather was concerned. In the first ball of the 66th over, Mitchell tried to play a delicate late cut off Sundar looking for a boundary.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma standing in the slip took a smart low catch. The ball dying down on the 37-year-old who cupped the ball and took the catch and threw it in the air. It was a key wicket for India who had seen Daryl Mitchell wage a lone battle with the bat in hand.

India were asked to bowl first after New Zealand won the toss in the morning. Devon Conway was the first wicket of the day when he was out LBW to Akash Deep for four. Tom Latham and Will Young batted well to add 44 runs for the second wicket before Washington Sundar struck twice.

The 25-year-old deceived Latham in the flight to dismiss the Kiwi skipper for 28. This was followed with the wicket of Rachin Ravindra bowled by Sundar for five runs. Daryl Mitchell came out to bat and ensured the Kiwis went to lunch at 92/3 from 27 overs.

Once the teams came out to bat again, both Will Young and Daryl Mitchell played well against the spinners. The game turned once more in the 45th over when Jadeja first had Will Young caught by Rohit Sharma for 71. Three balls later, Tom Blundell was bowled by Jadeja for a duck as the Kiwi batter was left stunned.

The left-arm spinner also went past the defense of Glenn Phillips for 17 off 28 balls. With the wickets of Ish Sodhi for 7 and Matt Henry for zero, Jadeja completed yet another Test fifer. Ajaz Patel hit a huge six off Sundar but was out LBW in the very next ball to end the innings. Jadeja ended with innings of 5/65 and Sundar picked 4/81 from his 18.4 overs.
