Indian skipper Rohit Sharma silenced his critics to score his 32nd ODI century on Sunday. The 37-year-old had been woefully out of form and had managed to score just two runs in the first game of the series in Nagpur. Rohit reached his ton with a six off Adil Rashid in the 26th over, with the crowd cheering India’s skipper.

Chasing 305 runs to win, the hosts needed a good start during the chase. That was provided by Rohit, who opened with Shubman Gill. After scoring just one run in the first over, Rohit hit Gus Atkinson for a boundary and followed it up with a flick for six. In the next over, India’s skipper hit Saqib Mahmood over the extra cover region for a six.

The runs kept coming despite the game pausing for a few minutes due to floodlight failures. Rohit’s fifty came off just 30 balls with the help of four boundaries and four huge sixes. By the time the three-figure mark had come up for the veteran, he had hit nine boundaries and seven huge sixes.

Gautam Gambhir and the rest of Indian team management will be delighted to see their skipper come back to form. The 32nd century now puts Rohit third on the list for the most centuries scored in ODI Cricket. Virat Kohli leads the list with 50 centuries, while former India batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has scored 49 tons.

Rohit’s last century for India came during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he led the team to the finals. During the recent tour of Australia, the veteran batter had managed to score just 31 runs from five innings. After sitting out the final game in Sydney, the 37-year-old played Ranji Trophy for Mumbai, where he failed to regain his form.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill scored his second successive fifty of the series and added 136 runs for the opening wicket. Gill got to his fifty off just 45 balls with seven fours and a six before he was dismissed by Jamie Overton for 60. His knock came off 52 balls with the help of nine fours and the solitary six.
