India A captain Shubman Gill failed to shine in the first innings of the Duleep Trophy opener against India B. Despite getting off to a fine start, the right-hander could not form a strong opening partnership with Mayank Agarwal as he fell prey to Navdeep Saini’s brilliant inswinger.

After an effective outing with the bat, Saini came to roll his arms and straightaway started challenging the opposition with his raw pace and bounce. The right-arm speedster bowled a delivery that looked like a wide and Gill chose not to keep his bat. However, the ball ended up hitting the off-stump and all the batsman could do was give a shocking reaction.

India B did not have a great start to their innings after being invited to bat first at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday, September 5. Openers Abhimanyu Easwaran and Yashasvi Jaiswal departed early on without contributing much to the scoreboard.

They lost five more wickets in quick succession and were reduced to 94/7 in 43.5 overs. While Sarfaraz Khan failed to perform well after being dismissed for just 9 runs, his younger brother Musheer Khan stood tall by scoring a belligerent ton. The right-hander slammed 181 off 373 balls to record the third-highest score by a teenager on Duleep Trophy debut.

While the rest of the middle and lower order failed to find resistance, Saini played a brilliant knock (56 off 144) and helped his team finish on 321. In reply, Gill (25 off 43) and Agarwal added a 57-run partnership for the first wicket before Saini dismissed the skipper. A couple of overs later, Agarwal (36 off 45) was also sent packing by Saini. India A are still trailing by more than 200 runs with Riyan Parag and KL Rahul at the crease.
