Team India batters Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant came out to bat with intent on the second day of the Mumbai Test. Wicketkeeper Pant hit three fours in the very first over of the day off Ajaz Patel. This set the wheels in motion for India to fight back after having lost three wickets in just ten minutes late on Friday evening.

Glenn Phillips was given the ball by Tom Latham to replace Matt Henry as the first change of the day. On his very first ball, the Kiwi off-spinner enticed Gill to go over the top. The 25-year-old Indian batter couldn’t time the ball well as Mark Chapman settled under the ball and dropped an easy catch.

It was a huge moment in the game as India seemed to be finally getting some luck going their way. The partnership between Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant is key for India if they have to go past New Zealand’s 235-run first-innings score. Shubman Gill reached his seventh Test fifty with a single off Ish Sodhi from 66 balls.

Make or break day for India in Mumbai

Rohit Sharma had begun well before he was out caught in the slips for 18 runs. India’s skipper had got a terrific ball that climbed off the length and got the edge of his bat. local boy Yashasvi Jaiswal was batting well and played a few delightful shots.

With his score of 30, the left-handed batter went for a reverse sweep and missed the line of the ball. Ajaz Patel who had picked all ten wickets during the last game at the same venue in 2021 got the Kiwis their first wicket. Mohammed Siraj was sent in as a night watchman but was out in the first ball for a duck to Patel.

Virat Kohli got off the mark with a four and was looking to see out the day with Gill. The former Indian skipper though committed hara-kiri when he went for a quick run. Matt Henry swooped in and threw down the stumps and Kohli was run out for 4.

At the time of writing, India were placed at 159/4 from 30 overs. They were trailing New Zealand by 76 runs with Pant batting on 50. Shubman Gill was batting on 55 and the two batters had added 75 runs for the 5th wicket. With the likes of Sarfaraz Khan and Ravindra Jadeja left in the hut, India will hope for a decent first-innings total on the board and win the game.
