Dinesh Karthik, a former Indian cricket player who has now turned into a broadcaster, believes Shubman Gill still lacks an understanding of what it means to be an Indian captain. Since Rohit Sharma retired, Gil has been named India's new Test captain. The 25-year-old's first task will be the next five-match Test series against England, which starts on June 20.
According to Dinesh Karthik, the young player is unaware of the difficulties that lie ahead of him and does not comprehend the magnitude of his batting position ahead of his maiden assignment as India’s Test captain. He said that several powerful teams have visited England and have had a difficult time.
“I really don’t think he has realised the enormity of what it means to be a test captain for India as of now. He’s walking into the lion’s den. Coming to England as a cricketing nation is not easy. There have been many a team with superstars who have come in and have found it really hard,” said Karthik on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast.

Karthik said that Shubman Gill and his squad may benefit from England’s weak bowling attack, which may potentially work in India’s favour. “Luckily for Shubman Gill, the England bowling attack is very vulnerable. That is the only positive I see; they’re going to be put under pressure with the batting. When I say bat, I mean England batting will definitely put the Indian team under pressure, but the bowling is an area that is still a work in progress for England, and that could very well play into India’s hands,” he added.

England team faces injury problems
With pacer Mark Wood out for at least the first three Test matches, England’s injury problems have gotten worse ahead of the crucial series. In addition, Jofra Archer will not play in the first game because Gus Atkinson is still recovering from a hamstring injury. It is unclear how well England’s fast bowling attack will do against a youthful Indian batting squad captained by Shubman Gill, who will have the enormous responsibility of leading the side on a tour abroad.
