Former Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma recently revealed his conversation with the former legendary MI pacer Lasith Malinga just before the last ball of the IPL 2019 Final against CSK. He also spoke about the plan he made with Lasith Malinga to execute against Shardul Thakur, who was batting for CSK when they needed 2 runs off the last ball.
Rohit Sharma said that he suggested Malinga come up with a slower one instead of delivering a fast yorker. However, Malinga planned to opt for a yorker, but Rohit didn’t find it well as he was well aware of Shardul Thakur’s batting style.
“My friend was playing in front of me” – Rohit Sharma
As per the plan, Malinga executed a successful slower yorker straight into the toes of Shardul, and he found himself trapped in front of the stumps before getting declared LBW by the umpire.
“My friend (Shardul Thakur) was playing in front of me, and I know what he does and how his bat swing is. I asked Malinga what he was thinking. He said, ‘I'll put in a yorker, the ball is reversing.’ Okay, good option, but if he gets an inside edge, it's a four. I knew that the ball would be reversing, and he's swinging the bat so hard that it can go for a four,” said Rohit Sharma during an interview with Star Sports’ host Jatin Sapru.
“Malinga said that a slower ball is a good option. I told him that his bat swing is so fast that he can put in a slower ball. If he goes for a six, it's okay, but his bat will be so far down that if he misses the slower ball, he'll either miscue it up or he'll miss the ball for an LBW. I didn't want to take the game into the Super Over,” he added later.

Furthermore, Rohit also clarified why he was not willing to go in the super over and also revealed the possible plan if he had any intention of going into the super-over.
“Because if I did, I would have asked him to put in a wide yorker, and we'll give him a run, and we'll put a field behind him. I wanted to get him out. And then this is also the luxury with Lasith Malinga, right? That he executes everything, he pinpoints everything. Because the ball was in his hand, I could have thought that. He had the ball in his hand, he was so experienced. He has won so many matches for the Mumbai Indians in such situations,” he said.
