Match number 41 in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) was played on Wednesday. The game saw both sides wear black armbands to remember the innocent lives lost in the Pahalgam attack on Tuesday. Veteran commentator Harsha Bhogle, as well as Hardik Pandya and Pat Cummins, could be seen with a sombre look on their faces.

Just as the toss was about to commence, Harsha Bhogle made a very moving statement. The veteran commentator said, “Normally, the toss is an indicator of something happy, something joyous to follow. A contest that is honourable, but if you note today, the air is sad and morose, as we mourn the killing of innocent Indians, enjoying a simple holiday in their own country”.

It was the Mumbai Indians who won the toss and chose to bowl first, and made just one change. Vignesh Puthur, who had made a terrific debut in his IPL career, replaced young seamer Ashwani Kumar. For SRH, Jaydev Unadkat made his return to the side as Mohammed Shami was named in the impact player’s bench.

Key encounter for both sides in Hyderabad

Coming into the game, the Mumbai Indians have won three matches in a row. Hardik Pandya and his men beat Delhi Capitals by 12 runs in Delhi. This was followed by two home wins, first against Hyderabad by four wickets and then the nine-wicket win against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday.

Speaking at the toss, Hardik Pandya expressed solidarity with the victim’s families and said, “I would like to firstly pass my condolences to the victims of the terrorist attack. We as a team and a franchise condemn any such attacks. We'll bowl first tonight”. Rohit Sharma has been named in the Impact players’ bench, which means the former MI skipper will just play as a pure batter.

SRH skipper Pat Cummins also expressed his pain over the Pahalgam attack and during his chat with Harsha Bhogle said, “It has been heartbreaking for us as well, our thoughts are with the victims and their families”. Hyderabad’s last game in the IPL was away to MI, and the former IPL Champions are ninth in the table with four points from seven games.
