Veteran cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle has named five players as India’s next Test captaincy options. Bhogle, who was live on his YouTube channel, named young batter Shubman Gill as one of the top choices along with Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, and KL Rahul. The veteran commentator also threw Ajinkya Rahane’s name into the mix.

The right-handed batter has been leading Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai in the IPL and domestic cricket, respectively. Rahane-led KKR became the fourth side to be eliminated from the IPL 2025 after their game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru was abandoned.

Rahane has been one of the most underrated names as far as captaincy is concerned. Speaking about the veteran batter, Bhogle said. “I would love to look at someone like Ajinkya Rahane as the short-term prospect, because he is a very good man-manager a very good tactician, proven at Test match level, and there is a batting position vacant at this stage at number six.”

It is to be noted that Rahane was the captain when India won their second Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. The veteran batter led the side after Virat Kohli went back home post the loss in the first game in Adelaide, where India were all out for 36. Injury-plagued India went on to win the series with a 2-1 margin against a full-strength Australia.

Aaron Finch lashes out at KKR after early exit from IPL 2025

Former Australian skipper Aaron Finch said that Kolkata Knight Riders’ close loss to Chennai Super Kings at home sealed their fate in IPL 2025. MS Dhoni’s side beat KKR by two wickets in what was a key game for the current IPL champions. Rahane’s men could only get one point in the rained-out game vs RCB, which confirmed KKR’s exit.

Speaking on JioHotstar, the former Aussie star said, “They’ve only got themselves to blame. They almost kicked themselves after that last game against CSK; it was theirs to win. The match was almost wrapped up, and they still couldn’t cross the line, which turned out to be an incredible win for Chennai. Throughout the season, there were too many moments where KKR just didn’t click."

Finch also slammed Kolkata for misusing Andre Russell during the campaign. “It didn’t start well for them. Andre Russell, being the match-winner that he is and has been for such a long time, was batting too far down the order for much of the tournament. He simply wasn’t given the opportunities to influence games the way he can.”
