Australian superstar Glenn Maxwell stole the show once more as he carved open Hobart’s bowling unit. The 36-year-old scored his third successive half-century in the Big Bash League during Melbourne Stars’ final group game against Hobart Hurricanes on Sunday. It was a must win game for the Stars if they have to reach the playoff matches as the fourth ranked team in the table.
Veteran pacer Cameron Gannon came in for harsh punishment from Maxwell as the Australian star smashed three consecutive sixes. The incident happened in the 19th over, Maxwell hit the third ball for a four to reach 45 runs. Gannon then bowled a length ball that Maxwell hit over mid-off for a six. That shot got Maxwell his third half-century in as many games.
In the fifth ball of the over, Maxwell hit the bowler straight down the ground for the second six of the over. Cameron Gannon was lost for ideas as he bowled a slower ball outside off-stump only to find Maxwell ready with a hook shot that travelled over fine leg for a six. 24 runs were scored in the penultimate over of the innings to help Stars go past 200 runs on the board.

Nathan Ellis won the toss for Hobart and put Stars into bat. Hobart skipper was quick to strike when he had Thomas Rogers caught by Ben McDermott for nine runs. Wicketkeeper Sam Harper scored 23 before he was out LBW to Nikhil Chaudhary.
Stars’ skipper Marcus Stoinis batted aggressively to score 32 off 19 balls. Stoinis was dismissed by young seamer Marcus Bean to leave the home side at 81/3. Stoinis’ knock included four boundaries and a huge six. The home team continued to play positively despite losing wickets at regular intervals.
Glenn Maxwell joined Beau Webster and the pair added 70 runs for the fourth wicket in just 30 balls. Webster was out after scoring 51 off 32 balls as he was caught by Chris Jordan off Mitchell Owen. The hosts ended their innings at 219/5 from their 20 overs with Maxwell not out on 76 off 32 balls with five boundaries six huge sixes.
