Monank Patel and his United States of America side began the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in fine style with a crushing win over Canada. The margin to win was 7 wickets as the home team coasted to the total with 14 balls to play. Canada didn’t help themselves as they fielded poorly and showed bad discipline with the ball.

Aaron Jones and Andries Gous were the heroes with the bat as the two batters shared a key stand of 131 runs for the third wicket. The Barbados-born Aaron Jones finished the match in style as he hit a huge six to stay not out on 94.

Earlier in the day Navneet Dhaliwal and Nicholas Kirton scored half-centuries apiece to help Canada post 194 runs on the board. It was a great effort from the Canadian duo as they kept the pressure on the American bowlers in the opening match.

USA kick off their T20 World Cup in fine style

Needing 195 runs to win, the USA Batters began slowly with Steven Taylor falling for a second ball duck. It wasn’t the kind of start the home team was looking for in their debut match in the T20 World Cup 2024 tournament. Andries Gous joined skipper Monank Patel as the pair added 42 runs for the 2nd wicket in 37 balls.

Dillon Heyliger gave Canada their second wicket when he dismissed the USA skipper for 16. That was the last moment of joy for the Canadian bowlers as Aaron Jones came out with aggressive intent and began to smash the opposition bowlers. The 29-year-old found good support in the form of Gous who didn’t let the pressure get to his team.

The pair added 131 runs in just 55 balls as the Canada bowlers threw in the towel. By the time Nikhil Dutta dismissed Gous for 65 runs, USA needed 22 runs from 26 balls and pocked their first win of the tournament. Corey Anderson was not out on 3 as Aaron Jones hit the winnings to stay not out on 94 runs off 40 balls with 4 fours and 10 sixes.
