Test cricket is the oldest format of the Gentlemen's game. The first-ever Test match was played between Australia and England in 1877 at the MCG, nearly 150 years ago. The legacy of the format has been incredible, although only 12 teams have gotten the Test status since then.

After Australia and England, South Africa became the third team to get the Test status. The West Indies, New Zealand, and India followed them before the World War 2. After India got split, Pakistan was formed, which immediately attained the Test status. Later, Sri Lanka also got the Test status.

Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Ireland have gotten the Test status in the last 40 years or so. Australia and England have the highest legacy in Tests, given their history of playing against each other from the 19th century. Hence, they have a lot of wins at home and away in Tests.

India

India recently overtook South Africa to become the team with the third highest number of wins in home conditions in Tests. After winning the Delhi Test 2025 against the West Indies, India completed a 2-0 clean sweep over the visiting side and returned back to the track at home, following their series loss to New Zealand in 2024.

India has the most number of wins in Tests at home for an Asian team. In 296 matches at home, the Asian team has 122 wins with a win percentage of 42.2. As of October 2025, India is the team with the third most number of Test wins at home. However, it could change in the upcoming months.

England

Along with Australia, England has the richest history for a Test-playing nation. England played Australia at MCG in 1877 in the first-ever Test match. For the rest of the 19th century, England dominated the sport. They were good both at home and away. While their domination has reduced since 1990s, England still continues to be one of the best teams in the world.

Even in the first half of the 20th century, England still went toe-to-toe with Australia and won many Ashes series both at home and away. In 558 matches, England has 241 wins with a win percentage of 43.2 at home. While England's win percentage isn't as impressive, their number of home wins might not be surpassed by this decade by any team below them.

Australia

Australia is the undisputed boss of both Test cricket and ODIs. In particular, they have a terrific record in Tests spanning for over 14 decades and 2 and a half centuries. There isn't a territory in the world which is left for Australia to conquer in the longest format of the game.

Australia has a positive win-loss record over a majority of teams in the longest format of the game. The Aussies have a whopping 262 wins in 450 matches with a terrific win percentage of 58.2, which is a testament to their domination in the longest format of the game, particularly at home.
