Rohit Sharma entered the elusive list of Indian captains after leading India to a historic T20 World Cup victory in June. It was India’s first ICC trophy in 11 years and maiden world title in 13 years. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the veteran opener credited “three pillars” for India's successful campaign in the USA and West Indies.
The Indian captain, who retired from T20 after the 2024 World Cup, was adjudged the Men's International Cricketer of the Year at the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards held in Mumbai. At the event, he praised former coach Rahul Dravid, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and BCCI secretary Jay Shah for supporting him and the team throughout the tournament.
“It was my dream to transform this team and not worry too much about the stats, the results, to make sure that we create that environment where people can go out there and play freely without thinking too much,” Rohit said.
“That is what was required. I got a lot of help from my three pillars, who are actually Mr Jay Shah, Mr Rahul Dravid (and the) chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar. That was very critical for me to do what I did and obviously not to forget the players, who came in at different points in time and helped the team to achieve what we achieved,” he added.
Once you get the taste of winning games you don't want to stop: Rohit
Notably, Rohit, who has led Mumbai Indians (MI) to five titles, is regarded as one of the most successful captains in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history. However, he expressed his desire to win more trophies with the Champions Trophy 2025 and the World Test Championship 2024-25 final coming up.
“There is a reason I won five IPL trophies. I'm not going to stop, because once you get the taste of winning games, winning Cups, you don't want to stop and we'll keep pushing as a team. We'll keep striving for better things in the future,” the 37-year-old said.
