Jay Shah slated to become new ICC Chairman amidst Governing Body's alleged dispute with major broadcaster

International Cricket Council is set to have a new chairman as Jay Shah the BCCI president is set to take over after Greg Barclay decides against a third term.

The International Cricket Council is set to appoint Jay Shah as the new president after current chief Greg Barclay decided against going for a third term. Jay Shah has been backed by the Australian and English boards. 

Australian Newspaper, The Age Reported, “amid a $US3 billion ($4.46 billion) dispute between the governing body and its major broadcast rights holder Star." Once this impasse came to light Greg Barclay decided against running for the top spot for a third successive term. 

The newspaper also stated, “Two sources with knowledge of discussions, speaking on condition of anonymity because negotiations are confidential, confirmed the move late on Tuesday night,"

Jay Shah set for massive role 

According to the rules, the chairman of the International Cricket Council can hold office for three terms with a maximum of 24 months in the chair. Greg Barclay has been at the helm of affairs since November 2020 before getting a second term in 2022. 

An ICC statement read, “ICC Chair Greg Barclay confirmed to the Board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down from the post when his current tenure finishes at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020, before being re-elected in 2022.”

The statement also read, “Current directors are now required to put forward nominations for the next Chair by 27 August 2024 and if there is more than one candidate, an election will be held with the term of the new Chair commencing on 1 December 2024."

If Jay Shah becomes the new chairman he will become the youngest ever administrator to hold office. He will also become the fifth Indian to hold office at the Apex Cricket Council. The previous members were Jagmohan Dalmiya followed by Sharad Pawar and former BCCI president N Srinivasan. The last Indian chairman of ICC was Shashank Manohar. 

Currently, Jay Shah occupies the post of the BCCI secretary and also the president of the Asian Cricket Council. It is widely reported that Pakistan Cricket chief Mohsin Naqvi is set to be the next president of ACC later this year.
