Veteran batter Karun Nair is aiming to make his return to Test cricket after his amazing run-scoring spree recently. The 33-year-old scored nearly 800 runs for Vidarbha during the recent Vijay Hazare trophy and was dismissed just twice. The right-handed batter scored 39 and 4 for Vidarbha in the Ranji Trophy match against Rajasthan last week.
The veteran revealed his future ambitions ahead of the final round of Ranji Trophy matches starting on Thursday. Karun Nair during his chat with Sports Today said “I still have the dream of playing Test cricket for India. I've said it in many interviews. So quite honestly, that was the only thing on my mind. I wasn't even thinking that I'd be mentioned or considered for the Champions Trophy squad, so I feel really grateful for that,"
The 33-year-old shot to fame with his amazing 303 not out against England during the 2016 Chennai Test match. Nair became just the second India batter to record a triple ton in the longest format of the game after Virender Sehwag. Those highs were short lived as he was dropped from the team just a few games later.
Former India batting legend Sachin Tendulkar had put out a tweet praising the batting feats of Karun Nair. The 33-year-old revealed how thrilled he was getting recognized by his batting hero. Nair also revealed that he wanted to focus on the present and keep scoring runs.
The veteran batter said to Sports Today “It was one of the greatest feelings ever to receive appreciation from your childhood hero. It was an amazing moment. I am really thankful to him for taking the time to put out that message. I feel truly blessed to have received those kind words from him. But again, I need to keep performing. Every game and every innings counts, so that remains my focus,"
When asked if Karun Nair was thinking about Champions Trophy selection, the 33-year-old said “If I'm being honest, before the tournament, I wasn't thinking about that. At least for me, it felt quite far away. But like I said, you have dreams, you have thoughts, you want to achieve things. But you're not thinking, 'I'm going to make it.' You think, 'I want to make it.' But whether it will actually happen is always a question mark in your head,"
