In his maiden stint as the Indian Test captain, Shubman Gill drew the series against England in their backyard. Sourav Ganguly praised Gill for the way he led the Indian team from the front as a batter and as the skipper in the tour of England. Shubman was the leading run-scorer in the series and won the Player of the Series Award.

Ahead of the Test series between India and South Africa, Ganguly was asked about Gill's captaincy in a press talk. The former Indian skipper spoke highly of Shubman and claimed him to be a very good batter. He felt that the 26-year-old would continue to do well for the Indian team.

"Shubman Gill is very good. He is a fantastic batsman and a very good captain. He captained India remarkably in England, as a young boy, going to England and captaining in England is not easy. He will continue to do well for India as a captain," Ganguly said.

The criticism on Shubman Gill's leadership role in Indian Cricket

There has been a mixed reaction from the fans and experts to Gill being handed the leadership roles in different formats. The star batter was named the Indian Test captain before the tour of England, as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from the longest format of the game.

Before the ODI series against Australia, Shubman was named the ODI captain of the side. In a surprising move, India named him the vice-captain of the T20I side after missing out on action in the shorter format for over a year. However, Gill answered the critics with his batting performance in the tour of England in Tests.
