In the next two matches against Pakistan and New Zealand, Iyer scored 56 and 79 runs each. In the first semi-finals against Australia, Indian batter scored 45 runs and formed a key stand with Virat Kohli. It has been a great comeback to the side for Iyer who was out of the team owing to poor form with the bat.

Speaking at the end of the match, Iyer had said, “Feeling ecstatic to be honest, it’s ineffable, hard to say it in words to be honest. My first ICC trophy, I’m quite overwhelmed looking at each and everyone in the dressing room. The way we have turned up towards this tournament and the way we have progressed, it’s been great."

Rohit Sharma praises Shreyas Iyer for his efforts with the bat

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma during post-match interaction lavished huge praise on Iyer when he said, “I am very proud of this team. We know the conditions would be difficult, but we adapted well. If you look at all the games, the first game was Bangladesh. I know it was only 230, but we knew the wicket was a little slow. We needed partnerships. That batters made big partnerships. Not to forget the silent hero Shreyas Iyer”

Speaking about his teammate, India’s skipper said, “He (Iyer) was brilliant throughout the tournament. He was very important in the middle phase for us. Stitched the partnerships with all the batters who are batting with him in that semi-finals against Australia."
