Ryan Ten Doeschate compared the pitch in Guwahati to that in Kolkata and noted a contrasting difference. The Indian Assistant Coach maintained that the toss doesn't affect the result of a match much. He felt that if India had played better in Kolkata, they would have won irrespective of the toss.
Ryan was present at the press conference after the end of Day 1 of the Guwahati Test. The Indian coaching staff member said that there is a need to look back and reflect on some of India's matches lately. He felt that the wickets like those in Guwahati could suit the home side better.

"My personal point of view is that the wicket very rarely determines who wins the game. If we’d played better in Kolkata, I feel we could have won the Test on that surface. But having said that, you’ve got to introspect and look at recent results. These sorts of wickets may suit us a little bit better," Ten Doeschate said.
"I think it was just good old-fashioned attritional test cricket," - Ryan Ten Doeschate on Day 1 of Guwahati Test 2025
The Indian Assistant Coach felt the wicket in Guwahati was a massive contrast compared to that in Kolkata. He claimed that the Indian team was expecting a better surface than the one they received. He then noted Tristan Stubbs' take on the Guwahati surface that scoring runs isn't easy, and attributed it to good old-fashioned attritional test cricket.

"I thought it’s a massive contrast from the Kolkata pitch, for one thing. We were expecting a better wicket. I thought it was pretty lifeless. But I’ve just heard Tristan Stubbs say that it was quite hard to score as well. I think it was just good old-fashioned attritional test cricket," Ten Doeschate added.
