Despite being on the back foot in the Perth Test in the Ashes 2025/26, Australia won and claimed a lead of 1-0 under Steve Smith's captaincy. The Australian stand-in skipper claimed that the goal is to win every match of the series. Smith said it's not easy to do it, given how good the visiting England side is.
"That's certainly our plan. We want to win every game. But you know, they're a good side. They've played good cricket for a long time, and we know that. We know the style of play that they have; they're going to have their moments where they come off, players are going to score quickly and get away from us at times," Smith said in the press conference.

Smith said the goal was to stay calm in tough moments and try to come up with plans to either slow the pace or dismiss the opponents. "And I think it's just about being calm in those moments, trying to come up with plans to either slow them down or get them out. I think there's a lot of belief in that change room," Smith added.
"It's different when you're 50 behind than if it were a 300-350," - Steve Smith
The Australian skipper felt it's slightly trickier to make a comeback after trailing by 50 runs, as opposed to trailing by 300 to 350 runs. He felt the bowlers were pretty comfortable in bowling in the second innings, as they didn't bowl a lot in the first innings.

"It's different when you're 50 behind than if it were a 300-350. And the guys only bowled 30-odd overs. So they've only bowled one or two spells, so they were reasonably fresh today. Obviously, it's still difficult to back up, and they did it exceptionally well," Smith added.
