According to reports carried by Express Sport, Rohit Sharma has informed Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar about his decision to not play the final Test in Sydney. The 37-year-old has been under massive pressure after his lean patch with the bat. Express Sport also has reported that Jasprit Bumrah will lead the side.
The newspaper also stated that KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal will open the batting with Shubman Gill coming at number 3. Akash Deep who is out of the game due to stiff back is set to be replaced by Prasidh Krishna. This is the first game of the tour for Prasidh Krishna who was part of the India A series against Australia A.
It has been a bad few months with the bat for Rohit Sharma with just one half-century from 10 innings. His last half-century for India in the Test format came during the second innings of the Bengaluru Test match against New Zealand. His form in Australia has been abysmal with a best score of 10 runs.
Is this the end for Rohit Sharma in Test cricket?
If the news of Rohit Sharma opting out is true then this could very well be the last time Indian fans could see him in the Test format. In his last match that was played the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Rohit had scores of 3 and 9. Pat Cummins had dismissed him on both occasions with his second innings seeing Rohit play 40 balls for his 9 runs.
Speaking to the media before the game, coach Gautam Gambhir said, “Everything is fine with Rohit. We are going to have a look at the wicket and announce the playing XI tomorrow”. This statement caused a lot of rumors to swirl around regarding Rohit’s likely participation in the game.
Jasprit Bumrah was the captain of the team who won the opening game of the series in Perth by 295 runs. Shubman Gill’s return would mean that Washington Sundar is likely to miss out of the game and Harshit Rana who will continue to remain on the bench. Rana was part of the team in the first two games but failed to show promise with the ball.
