There was massive controversy during the opening day of the first Australia vs India Test match on Friday. Opening batter KL Rahul was given out in controversial circumstances by the third umpire for 26 runs. It seemed that the bat had hit the pad rather than the ball but the third umpire hastily asked the on-field umpire to change his decision to out. Rahul walked back with utter disappointment on his face.

Taking to social media platform X, former India batter Robin Uthappa lashed out at the third umpire. Uthappa wrote, “How a third umpire makes a decision without accessing all angles!! Poor!! Just Piss poor!”. Most of the fans seemed to agree with his views and sided with Rahul and showed their sympathy towards the batter.

Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden also called out the decision on air. Hayden said, “His pad and bat are not together at that point in time as the ball passes. It's bat hitting pad after, in fact, the ball passes the edge. Does Snicko pick up the sound of the bat hitting the pad?”

Australian bowlers rock India early before lunch on Day 1

Jasprit Bumrah won the toss and chose to bat first on a wicket which had a lot in it for the bowlers. Yashasvi Jaiswal was the first man to be dismissed for a duck when he was caught by Nathan McSweeney off Mitchell Starc. It was a great start to McSweeney’s Test career who is making his debut as an opener.

Josh Hazlewood struck for Australia when he got the wicket of Devdutt Padikkal for zero. The left-handed batter played 23 balls before he edged the ball to wicketkeeper Alex Carey. The fans stood in unison and welcomed Virat Kohli to the crease. India’s former skipper played a nothing shot to be out for 5 to give Hazlewood his 2nd scalp.

KL Rahul was batting well and went past 3000 runs in Test cricket. His knock contained 3 boundaries before he was out in the controversial fashion. 25 overs had been bowled before lunch with India on 51/4. Rishabh Pant was batting on 10 off 24 balls with Dhruv Jurel on 4 with each batter having a boundary each to their name.
