Star India all-rounder Axar Patel has left everyone awestruck with his sensational bowling against Bangladesh in India’s Champions Trophy 2025 campaign opener. Axar completely strangulated the top order of the Bangladesh batting attack with his tight and economical bowling. Besides that, the star left-arm spinner also gave some big blows to Bangladesh during powerplay.
Axar scalped two wickets on two successive balls in the ninth over of Bangladesh’s innings. He dismissed the star opener Tanzid Hasan and veteran wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim consecutively on the second and third ball of the over. He also created a big chance of a third successive wicket and a hattrick by forcing the Bangladesh batter to misjudge the ball and it went to India skipper Rohit Sharma in the first slip.
However, in an unfortunate turnaround of events, skipper Rohit Sharma happened to drop the catch Axar missed a well-deserved hattrick, which could be his first-ever in the ODI career for India.
With that said, here we’ll look at the records that Axar Patel could’ve broken if he had taken the hat trick in the game against Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy 2025.

Here’s a look at the records Axar Patel could’ve broken with a hattrick:
If Rohit Sharma had taken that catch and the hat trick had come to the name of Axar, he would have become the first cricketer in history to claim a hat trick in his debut in the ICC ODI tournament. Besides that, he would have also become the first-ever Indian spinner to scalp a hat trick in men’s ICC tournaments.
Notably, former West Indies pacer Jerome Taylor is the only bowler to claim a hat trick in the 27-year-long history of the Champions Trophy. He achieved this feat against Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy 2006. If Axar had completed his hat trick, he would have become only the second player in the Champions Trophy history to bag a hat trick.
Axar would have also become the second Indian spinner to pick a hat trick in ODI cricket after Kuldeep Yadav, who achieved this feat on two occasions.
