Former India skipper and the modern-day batting great, Virat Kohli, left everyone in a big shock, announcing his Test retirement just a month ago on May 12. His retirement came just five days after former skipper Rohit Sharma’s retirement on May 7. Kohli’s retirement sparked a big debate and discussions in the cricketing fraternity.

The retirement timing was also under the scanner as Team India was gearing up for the five-match Test series against England. Many former cricketers and experts in the game also criticised the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for not managing this entire turnaround wisely and more effectively.

In the same line of events, former India head coach Ravi Shastri came up with a big statement, while making some shocking revelations after Kohli retired from the longest format of the game.

“It’s about the way he carried himself” – Ravi Shastri

Shastri also said that he would have surely done anything to avoid Kohli’s Test retirement ahead of such an all-important Test series in England.

‘If I had anything to do with it, I would have made him captain, straightaway after Australia,” said Shastri in a video SonyLiv shared on their social media handles.

“Virat has announced his retirement from Test matches, which is sad, you know, because he's a great player. A great player. It's only when you go that people truly realise how big a player you were. Stats don’t do justice — it’s about the way he carried himself, especially as an ambassador for Test match cricket, particularly overseas. The way he played at Lord’s, and how his team turned things around — it was unreal. And I’m glad I was a part of it. ” he added later.

Recently, Virat Kohli was in action for RCB in the Indian Premier League 2025, where his team lifted their first-ever IPL title after a long wait of 18 years since the tournament’s inception in 2008.
