The 23rd game of IPL 2024 went down to the wire as Punjab Kings lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad at home by 2 runs. Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma who had played well in the last game against Gujarat Titans tried to pull off yet another miraculous win for their team.

Punjab Kings had to score 29 runs from 6 balls and the first two balls of the over went for 14 runs. Jaydev Unadkat resorted to his short ball tactics once again to deny the home team the needed momentum to win the game.

This loss is now the third defeat of the season for PBKS after having played 5 matches. For Pat Cummins this was their 2nd win in a row to make it three wins out of five games. The result put SRH joint fourth in the table with CSK while PBKS are now in the 6th place.

Sunrisers Hyderabad win close game in mad last over finish –

It was Punjab Kings skipper Shikhar Dhawan who won the toss and chose to bowl first. The home side didn’t opt for DRS when there was a clear spike of Travis Head’s bat. The SRH openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma added 27 runs for the first wicket in 2.3 overs.

Arshdeep Singh struck twice in three balls to jolt the visitors by dismissing Travis Head for 21 and Aiden Markram for a duck. Sam Curran and Harshal Patel then joined the party to take the wickets of Abhishek Sharma (16) and Rahul Tripathi (11).

Nitish Reddy playing just his second game of the IPL scored his maiden half-century. The 20-year-old was out for 64 runs which came off a mere 37 balls. Abdul Samad too swung his bat to score 25 off 12 as Sunrisers Hyderabad ended their innings at 182/9.

Pat Cummins struck the first blow when he beat Jonny Bairstow for pace to castle him for a duck. Bhuvneshwar Kumar got rid of young Prabhsimran Singh for 4 and also had Shikhar Dhawan stumped by Klaasen for 14.

Sam Curran and Sikandar Raza tried to restore order with a crucial stand of 38 runs. Pat Cummins took a stunning catch to dismiss the Englishman for 29. Sikandar Raza played a few delightful shots before an ill-timed scoop shot ended his innings.

With the score reading 114/6 at the fall of Jitesh Sharma, the home side still needed 69 runs from 27 balls. Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma played a few big shots to keep the hosts in the hunt. It was too late though as Jaydev Unadkat showed his experience to help SRH gain all two points from the game.
