Once the replays came on, it was seen that the batter had got a huge edge. There was a huge groan in the stands when the replays came on the big screen. Farid Khan wrote, “How did the umpire give this not out? Nitish Reddy gloved it. What was this decision?”

Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana were given their debut caps ahead of the start of play. Former skipper Virat Kohli handed the caps to the two youngsters who had been in impressive form in recent times. Reddy was given a call-up after his impressive performances in the IPL and also during the T20I series against Bangladesh.

The 21-year-old Nitish Kumar Reddy began his international Test career with two beautifully hit fours off Nathan Lyon. The Australian spinner was hit for two boundaries off successive balls.

This was followed by two reverse sweeps that helped India cross the 100-mark for the loss of six wickets. The youngster also played a cracking straight drive off Hazlewood to show his class with the bat.

At the time of writing, India were placed at 121/6 in the 45th over with Rishabh Pant batting on 37 and Reddy on 27. Team India went into lunch at 51/5 having lost their top order. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal perished for ducks dismissed by Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

Virat Kohli could score only 5 before being caught by Khawaja off Hazlewood. There was massive controversy when KL Rahul was given out caught for 26 runs in dubious fashion. Dhruv Jurel playing instead of Sarfaraz Khan was out for 11. Washington Sundar played 15 balls to score his four runs as both the batters were dismissed by Mitchell Marsh.
