West Indian batters ended up with just 180/4 from their first Super-8 match in T20 World Cup 2024. The English bowlers did well to restrict the home team with some disciplined bowling in the death overs. Sam Curran in particular gave away just 6 runs in the 19th over to peg the free-scoring Caribbean batters back.

It was Jos Buttler who won the toss and chose to bowl first on what is a good batting wicket in St. Lucia. Both sides had made a few changes to their team from their last Group match encounters.

The West Indians began with caution in the first two overs before cutting loose. Reece Topley and Mark Wood put in a disappointing performance once more as the pair went wicketless from their combined 6 overs and gave away 62 runs in total .

Huge challenge ahead for England

Johnson Charles and Brandon King began with caution before taking the attack to the England bowlers. 29-year-old Brandon King hit a huge six off Topley before having to walk off the field owing to an injury.

Moeen Ali got England their first scalp with Johnson Charles perishing for 38. Nicholas Pooran who had scored 98 in the previous match was batting well yet again before he was out to Jofra Archer.

Liam Livingstone conceded 20 runs form his only over with the ball as Rovman Powell flexed his muscles with huge sixes. The English star ended the entertainment with the wicket of the West Indian skipper.

Sherfane Rutherford yet again came to the rescue of the home side with 28 not out from 15 balls. The left-handed-batter had scored an unbeaten 68 versus New Zealand in the Group game to bail his team out of trouble.

His 37-run stand from 19 balls with Romario Shepherd was the reason West Indies could post 180 runs on the board. England bowlers did their best in the end overs to deny the home team from reaching close to 200 with some disciplined bowling.

Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Liam Livingstone, and Moeen Ali picked one wicket each for their side. The onus is now on Jos Buttler and Phil Salt to chase down this challenging total and get their team the first win the Super-8 stages of the tournament.
