South Africa gave a humiliating loss to Afghanistan in the 1st semi-final of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. The match was played on June 27 at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad where the fans saw Afghanistan losing the must-win game by 9 wickets. However, the Proteas created history by qualifying for a T20 World Cup final for the first time.

Talking about the match, Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bat first in order to put pressure on the South African side in the 2nd innings. However, the decision didn’t work well for the Afghanistan squad as they lost their first 5 wickets inside the powerplay. The South African pacers were wreaking havoc with the new ball and never let the Afghanistan batters settle down on the pitch.

Tabraiz Shamsi also provided 3 breakthroughs for the team which helped the Proteas to restrict the Afghans to just 56 runs in 11.5 overs. Marco Jansen and Shamsi got 3 wickets each while Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje claimed 2 wickets each.

Who will South Africa face in the final?

Chasing the target, South Africa did lose their star opener Quinton de Kock early in the 2nd over but that was the only wicket Afghanistan could get as the Proteas chased the target quite easily with 67 balls to spare and won the match by 9 wickets. Afghanistan, who were brilliant throughout the tournament, are now the holder of an unwanted record.

They have registered the lowest scores in the T20 World Cup semi-finals. On the other hand, the Proteas will now play their first-ever World Cup final. They will now head towards Barbados and wait for their opponent which will be decided after the semi-final 2 game between India and England in Guyana.
