The first semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024 is being played between South Africa and Afghanistan at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad. Afghanistan are playing their first-ever semi-final in an ICC event and the path to get the qualification ticket was not easy for them.

Meanwhile, asked to bowl first, the Proteas bowlers are on fire as they have dismantled Afghanistan’s batting order completely. The most experienced bowler in the South African squad has also shown up in a must-win game as he got two Afghanistan batters Ibrahim Zadran and Mohammad Nabi in the same over. He cleaned up both the batters beautifully.

Poor batting display by Afghanistan batters

It is quite disheartening for Afghanistan’s fans to see their team not performing in a must-win game. Talking about the match so far, Afghanistan’s skipper Rashid Khan won the toss and decided to bat first. However, the decision didn’t go well as the highest scorer of the tournament so far, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, departed cheaply on a duck in the very first over.

The Afghans lost their 5 wickets inside the mandatory powerplay, courtesy of a brilliant pace bowling display by South African seamers. They showed the Afghanistan batters what an ICC looks like. Tabraiz Shamsi also bowled well in the middle overs and sent two batters back to the pavilion in a single over. South Africa restricted Afghanistan to a mere total of 56 runs.

However, it’d be interesting to see what would be the approach of South African batters when they come out to bat in the 2nd innings. Known for choking in the knockouts, the Proteas will look to remove the ‘chokers’ tag and get the qualification ticket for the final.
