There is finally good news for Indian cricket fans as Mohammed Shami is likely to embark to Australia soon. According to reports carried by Dainik Jagran, the 34-year-old seamer will likely fly down under along with skipper Rohit Sharma. Both players are likely to touch down in Perth ahead of the first test match on Friday.
The reports further state that Mohammed Shami may not play the game and his participation is subject to further fitness evaluation. Shami last played for India during the finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup. After a long lay-off the right-arm pacer is back on the field and picked 7-wickets on his return to Ranji cricket.
Shami bowled 19 overs in the first innings for Bengal and picked 4/54 with the wickets of skipper Shubham Sharma, Saransh Jain, Kumar Kartikeya, and Kulwant Khejroliya. With the bat, Shami scored 37 for Bengal in the second innings from 36 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes. In the second innings, the 34-year-old dismissed Anubhav Agarwal, Rajat Patidar, and Kumar Kartikeya to aide Bengal to 11 run win.

The 34-year-old last played Test match against Australia during the WTC 2023 finals. So far in 64 Tests, Shami has picked 229 wickets with a best of 6/56 which incidentally came in Perth during the 2018 tour. With Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj in the team, India;s team management will be hopeful to have Shami back in the squad as well to compliment the attack.
Meanwhile, according to reports by ESPNCRICINFO, young batter Devdutt Padikkal is most likely to stay back in Australia. The move comes after Shubman Gill injured his thumb while fielding on Saturday. Devdutt Padikkal was part of the India A team that had toured Australia for a series of matches. The left-handed batter made his Test debut against England earlier this year.
The report from ESPNCRICINFO stated “It has also been learnt that Devdutt Padikkal, who was part of the India A group in Australia, will stay back with the Test squad. It could not be confirmed, however, if Padikkal will be part of the main squad or the reserves”
