England Cricket Team were dealt a huge blow when it was announced that Mark Wood will not take to the field on Saturday. The right-arm pacer has been ruled out of taking the field on Saturday, 5th day of the First Test Match between England and Sri Lanka being played in Manchester.

The English team management put out a statement revealing that the pacer had suffered an injury to his right thigh. The statement also said that the 33-year-old will not take the field on Saturday, while no further update has been given.

Ollie Pope and his England side have the services of Chris Woakes, Matthew Potts, and Gus Atkinson to call upon. It isn’t clear if Mark Wood is set to be ruled out for the summer with two more Test matches left to be played.

Sri Lanka looking to build on their lead

The end of the third day of the 1st Test in Manchester saw Sri Lanka end their day at 204/6. Dinesh Chandimal was batting on 20 while Kamindu Mendis was batting on 56. At one stage the visiting side was in trouble with their score reading 1 run for the loss of two wickets.

England had taken a lead of 122 runs thanks to a terrific ton by Jamie Smith who scored 111 runs. The 24-year-old scored his maiden Test ton and batted well with the tail-enders.

Sri Lanka will hope to pout up a challenging total on the board on what looks like a dicey wicket to bat in the 4th innings. Dinesh Chandimal himself was struck on his hand while batting on the third day.

The veteran Sri Lankan star will be hungry to score runs and take the overall lead past 150. England have already been dogged by injuries before the start of the series. Ben Stokes is already out of the series thanks to the injury he suffered during the Hundred game. Zak Crawley is another casualty who had injured himself a few weeks ago. cr
