17 wickets fell on the first day of the Perth test between Australia and India. This was the first instance in 72 years that such an occurrence took place in Australia. The last time this happened was in 1952 as the pace bowlers ruled the roost. Indian skipper Jasprit Bumrah was the stand-out bowler for India with figures of 4/17 from his 10 overs.

India, after opting to bat first, were all out for 150 runs on the board. Pacer Josh Hazlewood broke the back of the visitors batting unit to pick 4/29 from 13 overs. His scalps included Devdutt Padikkal for a duck and Virat Kohli for 5. The right-arm pacer polished off the tail dismissing Jasprit Bumrah for 8 and Harshit Rana for 7.

Debutant all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy’s 41 was the best score for India. Rishabh Pant played an entertaining knock of 37 before becoming one of two wickets for Pat Cummins. Mitchell Starc also picked 2 wickets, which included KL Rahul for 26. India’s batter was the source of controversy as he was given out despite the bat hitting the pads.

Australia left reeling after Jasprit Bumrah’s blitz with the ball

Debutant batter Nathan McSweeney seemed to like the early sight of Test cricket as he scored 2 fours to get off the mark. Skipper Bumrah though had other plans as he had the wicket of McSweeney LBW for 10. There could have been a second wicket in the same over as Marnus Labuschagne’s catch was dropped by Virat Kohli in the slips.

Bumrah though didn’t let that bother him as he first dismissed Usman Khawaja caught by Kohli for 8. This was followed by a golden duck for Steve Smith to leave Australia at 19/3. Travis Head played two flashy shots for four before he was beaten for pace by Harshit Rana to be castled for 11.

Mitchell Marsh was caught well by KL Rahul who kept his eyes on the ball to take a fine low catch. This gave Mohammed Siraj his first wicket of the game. Marnus Labuschagne was then trapped LBW for 2 after having played 52 balls as Mohammed Siraj got his 2nd wicket.

Bumrah grabbed his third when Pat Cummins gave a simple catch to Pant for 6. At the close of play, Australia were placed at 67/7 still trailing India by 83 runs with Carey batting on 19 and Starc on 6. All the wickets were taken by the pacers as the match was seemingly hurting towards an early finish.
