Rain-inflicted third Test at the Gabba in Brisbane ended in a draw, leaving both Australia and India in dismay. Meanwhile, it came up as a good phase of cricket for the star India pacer Jasprit Bumrah as he finished with a nine-wicket haul in the entire game, conceding just 94 runs.
Notably, the 31-year-old also claimed an outstanding five-wicket haul in the first innings of the Gabba Test when all the Aussie batters were completely dominating the other Indian bowlers.
With his remarkable performance in Brisbane, Bumrah earned 14 rating points, which took the number to his career’s highest rating points i.e., 904. This rating has also taken him on the equal grounds with India’s former legendary off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin. Now, Ashwin and Bumrah have jointly become the highest-rated Test bowlers for India in the history of the game.
A chance for Jasprit Bumrah to surpass Ravichandran Ashwin
However, the star pacer will have an opportunity to surpass Ashwin’s numbers in the ICC Test Rankings in the upcoming Boxing Day Test at the MCG in Melbourne. Bumrah is currently placed at the apex of ICC Test bowlers’ rankings. He is followed by the veteran Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood and the star Proteas spearhead, Kagiso Rabada.
Speaking of Bumrah’s stellar Test career, he has been one of the top performers in the SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia). Out of his overall 194 Test wickets in 83 innings, the Ahmedabad-born has scalped 134 wickets in 56 innings only in the SENA countries.
Bumrah is also on the ninth spot in the list of highest wicket-takers in SENA countries since his debut on January 5, 2018. He has 4 four-wicket hauls and eight five-wicket hauls to his name while bowling on SENA wickets.
He could be a vital cog in the wheel for India in the upcoming two Tests in the ongoing five-match Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
