Australia defeated Bangladesh by 28 runs via the Duckworth and Lewis method in Antigua on Thursday. The 2021 T20 World Cup winners were 100/2 in 11.2 overs when rains came down for a third time to stop the contest. At that stage, Australia was 28 runs ahead of where Bangladesh was to seal the game in their favour.

This win now puts Australia on level points with India, who themselves had started with a win over Afghanistan by 47 runs. It was a comprehensive performance as Pat Cummins became the 2nd Australian bowler in T20 World Cup history to secure a hat trick.

Bangladesh was asked to bat first after Mitchell Marsh won the toss. Both teams made changes to their playing XI from their previous encounter. The Bangladeshi side could only conjure up 140 runs on the board from their stipulated 20 overs. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto was the best batter for his team with 41 runs.

David Warner and Travis Head began well as the pair added 65 runs for the first wicket. The two batters were aggressive right from the start as they didn’t let the Bangladeshi bowlers settle. Fours and sixes were hit with relative ease while the singles and doubles came without any fuss.

After the second rain stoppage, the game changed once more. Rishad Hossain got the ball to turn in sharply and got the big wicket of Travis Head for 31 off 21 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes.

Skipper Mitchell Marsh scored just 1 before he was caught right in front of the stumps to be given out LBW. Glenn Maxwell was not out on 14 from 6 balls with one four and six while David Warner had gone past his fifty. The veteran star was not out on 53 from 35 balls with five fours and 3 sixes when the game was halted and eventually called off.

Bangladesh will next play India on the 22nd of June and will want to win the match to keep their hopes alive. Australia on the other hand will play Afghanistan on the same day in the late evening game and will look to win the game and seal their place in the semi-finals.
