Former South African legend Jacques Kallis addressed the media live on Wednesday afternoon. The 49-year-old took a plethora of questions from Indian media. Kallis is currently associated with the Pretoria Capitals in the position of assistant coach. SA20 2025 is set to begin on 9th January, with Sunrisers Eastern Cape heading in as defending champions.
The former South African legend was asked by Sports.info to give his views on the growth of the league. Kallis was also asked how young superstars like Dewald Brevis can benefit from the league. To which Kallis replied, “The league has clearly done great and it has grown from year one.”
“The league has been working very hard, and I am looking forward to this season. It (SA20 league) keeps growing, people want to watch, and it comes close to IPL as possible,” further added Jacques Kallis.
SA20 League: perfect launch pad for youngsters?
For the last two years, SA20 League has given the world some exciting talents to look at. Ryan Rickelton has been a standout performer, which has earned him a contract with the Mumbai Indians for IPL 2025 season. Up-and-coming batter Dewald Brevis has also been part of the league, while young pace ace Kwena Maphaka is set to make his league debut in 2025.
While addressing the impact it could have on young players, Kallis said, “As far as the youngster, like I said, there is such a wonderful chance for these young guys to come through and show their skills, and if you can be successful in a league like this with such quality opposition and overseas players, it will certainly throw your name forward to playing international cricket.”
The former South African great also added that one good season can propel players into the big stage. “And contracts around the world and also getting a good IPL contract, and with so many people watching and you have one big season, it can kickstart your career, and we look forward to these youngsters to get so many opportunities, which makes it more exciting for us,” he said.
