It is the 18th season of the Indian Premier League, and all ten teams are on the cusp of entering the halfway stage of the season. Since the league was started in 2008, IPL has gone on to become the number one franchise cricket league in the world. Some of the top cricket names in the world have made their presence felt in the league. The league has seen both Indian and International players create a niche for themselves and find a huge cult following amongst the fan base.
Winning the IPL title is one of the toughest tasks for any captain, as there is a massive competition over the 10 weeks the tournament is being played. The late great Shane Warne and his Rajasthan Royals defied all odds to win the title in the first season of the tournament. Royals beat much-fancied Chennai Super Kings, led by MS Dhoni, in the finals of the tournament.
In the next few years, Chennai Super Kings became the team to beat as they steamrolled various teams to win a plethora of titles. Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir emerged as strong challengers to MS Dhoni and his Chennai side. Rohit Sharma led his Mumbai Indians side to five title wins while Gautam Gambhir led Kolkata to two titles in a space of three years.
David Warner then broke the stranglehold when he led Sunrisers Hyderabad to their first title in the 2016 season. This was the first time in IPL history that a team had won the title in different avatars. Before Warner’s title win in 2016, it was Adam Gilchrist-led Deccan Chargers that won the title in 2009, beating RCB in the finals.
