IPL and BCCI take action, suspend Digvesh Rathi, Abhishek Sharma faces fine after heated clash in LSG vs SRH game

In what seems to be a serious and disciplinary action, the IPL and BCCI suspended LSG spinner Digvesh Rathi, alongside slapping a fine on young SRH opener Abhishek Sharma. This decision was taken by the authorities after both players involved in a heated exchange during the LSG vs SRH IPL 2025 game in Lucknow.

It was for the third time in the current season only when Rathi was found guilty of a Level 1 offence. He now has five demerit points against his name, resulting in a suspension from his team’s last league-stage match.

“This was his third Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 this season and hence, he has accumulated two Demerit Points, in addition to three Demerit Points he had accumulated earlier – One Demerit Point against Punjab Kings on April 01, 2025 and two Demerit Points against Mumbai Indians on April 04, 2025,” said IPL in an official statement.

“As he now has Five Demerit Points this season, which result in a one-game suspension, Digvesh will now be suspended for LSG’s next game – against Gujarat Titans on May 22, 2025, in Ahmedabad. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the statement added later.

Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma was fined 25 per cent of his match fee, alongside receiving one demerit point.

Notably, Rathi has been seen as a serial offender in the ongoing IPL 2025; the IPL and BCCI also fined him earlier in the tournament's initial phase for his ‘notebook’ celebration. The same notebook celebration in the LSG vs. SRH match didn’t go down well with SRH opener Sharma after Rathi dismissed him. The Southpaw responded with an equal amount of anger and attitude. Furthermore, this altercation was stopped after the umpire and other LSG fielders intervened.
