Mumbai Indians (MI) finally snapped their four-match losing streak against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). MI beat CSK by nine wickets with 26 balls to spare in what was a ruthless match with the bat. Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav completely annihilated CSK’s bowlers to take their team to sixth in the table. This was also Mumbai’s third win in successive games.

Hardik Pandya won the toss and put CSK to bat and saw the visitors score 176 for five from their 20 overs. Ravindra Jadeja was the top scorer for CSK with 53 not out from 35 balls with four boundaries and two sixes. Shivam Dube was the next best batter with 50 off 32 balls with two boundaries and four huge sixes. 

In reply, got off to a great start thanks to the 63-run stand for the opening wicket, which came off 6.4 overs. Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma put Chennai’s pace bowlers to the sword in the powerplay overs. Ravindra Jadeja then struck with the ball when he got the wicket of Rickelton for 24 caught by Ayush Mhatre.

After the fall of Rickelton, it was Rohit Sharma who opened his shoulders and hit Ashwin for a huge six in the eighth over. Suryakumar Yadav walked out to bat at number three and proceeded to hit Jadeja for a four and then swept the spinner for a six. India’s T20I skipper wasn’t done as he hit Jadeja for a few more boundaries in the bowler’s next over. 

Rohit Sharma reached his first fifty of the season on the final ball of the 12th over with a single off Ashwin. In the next over, Suryakumar Yadav hit Noor Ahmad for three successive fours to put MI on the brink of a win. The introduction of Matheesha Pathirana saw the Sri Lankan pacer concede 14 runs from his first over. 

Suryakumar Yadav reached his fifty with a single in the second ball of the 15th over off Noor Ahmad’s bowling. At the end of 15 overs, MI were placed at 157 for one, still needing 20 runs to win from five overs. Pathirana came on to bowl his second over and began the over with a wide ball. In the next ball, Rohit hit the pacer for a huge six over the square leg region. 

Suryakumar Yadav came on to take strike with MI needing 12 runs from 28 balls. Yadav deposited the ball deep into the extra cover region to bring the target down to six runs. The win came on the next ball when Pathirana saw the ball fly over his head into the long-off boundary. With this loss, CSK now are on the brink of becoming the first side to be knocked out of the IPL 2025 season.
