The Mumbai Indians outplayed the defending champions, the Kolkata Knight Riders, by a big margin of 8 wickets in the 12th match of the ongoing Indian Premier League 2025. The game was played at MI’s home ground, Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, on Monday, March 31. MI were coming off two successive defeats in their first two games.
The hosts’ skipper, Hardik Pandya, won the toss and asked the KKR to bat first; batting first, the holders were rattled by the MI bowling attack, featuring their debutant pacer Ashwani Kumar. MI bowlers bundled out the holders at the score of just 116 runs in 16.2 overs. It was only Angkrish Raghuvanshi who scored 26 runs off 16 balls, followed by Ramandeep Singh’s 22 runs off 12 balls. Besides these two, Rinku Singh and Manish Pandey also contributed with 17 and 19 runs, respectively.
Young debutant MI pacer Ashwani Kumar claimed an amazing four-wicket haul, scalping 4 wickets at 24 runs in his 3 overs, alongside 2 wickets claimed by Deepak Chahar. Apart from these two, Trent Boult, Hardik Pandya, Vignesh Puthur, and Mitchell Santner also picked a wicket each.
Ryan Rickleton powers MI to a comfortable run-chase
While chasing the target, MI’s opening duo of former skipper Rohit Sharma and young wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickleton provided a blistering start of 46 runs in just 5.2 overs. Rohit fell prey to Andre Russell at the score of 13 runs off 12 balls, with a six.
Later in the innings, Ryan Rickleton played a swashbuckling and unbeaten half-century knock, scoring 62 runs off just 41 balls, with 4 fours and five sixes, alongside skipper Suryakumar Yadav’s unbeaten 27 runs off just 9 balls, with three fours and two sixes. Number three batter Will Jacks also contributed with 16 runs off 17 balls, with a six.
Eventually, Mumbai Indians won the game by a big margin of 8 wickets to register their first win in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League after facing two consecutive defeats. Young pacer Ashwani Kumar won the Player of the Match award for his match-winning spell.
