The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday evening announced the new retention rules for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. A total of 6 retentions plus the right to match card has been allowed. One of the biggest additions has been the foreign players' wages which has seen a huge change.

According to the new rule, BCCI have become strict on the foreign players' pull-out issue. This has seen the board come out with a new rule that will see many of the franchises not face last-minute pullouts.

As per the new ruling, any overseas player must first register for Auctions. Only injuries or other reasons specified by his national cricket board. If the player doesn’t register himself for the auction he won't be allowed into the pool for the subsequent mini auctions as well.

What are the new overseas player caps?

During the last IPL Auctions, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins became the costliest players of all time. The Aussie skipper became the first ever star to get INR 20 crores. Starc then broke the record when he was picked for INR 24.75 Crores by KKR.

This year the rules have been changed as the BCCI wants a cap on the overseas player earnings. An example being if Shubman Gill is retained for INR 18 Crores by Gujarat Titans which is the highest retention price.

Let us suppose that Mayank Yadav is picked for INR 15 Crores during the auction, then the highest value any overseas player can be picked in the Mini Auction is 15 Crores. Even if a team buys a player for 25 Crores, the player’s value will stay at INR 15 Crores. The rest of INR 10 crores will go into BCCI’s coffers which is to be used for welfare purposes.

The last date for the retained players to be submitted is 31st October 2024. If a team decides to retain 6 players for the coming season then they won't have access to the RTM card. In case a team decides to retain just 5 players then they will have access to the one RTM Card being made available.
