IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants made their debut in the Indian Premier League two years back in the year 2022 edition of the tournament. However, most of the cricket fans, especially the LSG fans were left in shock when the team didn’t appear in their regular dark blue kits in a match against KKR against the Eden Gardens in Kolkata during IPL 2023.
LSG wore the maroon and green kits, the special jersey of the Mohun Bagan football club. It was because LSG’s owner RP Sanjiv Goenka is also the owner of the ISL side ATK Mohun Bagan. One of the oldest football clubs in Kolkata and India was later renamed Mohun Bagan Super Giant on June 1, 2023.
Now, LSG are all set to take on KKR in IPL 2024 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, April 14, 2024. So, they will once again be seen in the maroon and green kits to pay tribute to Kolkata especially the giant football club Mohun Bagan.
“It is (Mohun Bagan) not an institution, it’s an emotion. Its legacy represents the city of Kolkata,” said LSG’s team owner Shashwat Goenka last year during IPL 2023.
“It is with this in mind, that we have decided that LSG will don the iconic colours of maroon and green in Saturday’s match against KKR at Eden Gardens,” he added later.
LSG looking ahead to get winning momentum back
Speaking of the performance of the Lucknow Super Giants in the ongoing IPL 2024 so far, they have won 3 matches out of the 5 matches they have played, including 2 defeats. Having 6 points to their name, KL Rahul’s men are currently in the fourth spot of the points table of the tournament, behind CSK and KKR at number 3 and 2 following the table toppers Rajasthan Royals.
The upcoming game against KKR will be crucial for LSG to strengthen their spot among the top four teams in the points table of the tournament.
