India whitewashed the three-match T20I series but did not get the desired result in the ODI series. They were clear favourites to win the series opener but a dramatic turnover in the last over saw the match end in a tie. The Men in Blue lost the subsequent match and now the home team is leading the series 1-0.

There was no Super Over after the match ended in a tie and that raised several questions regarding the rules. India needed just five runs in 18 balls with two wickets in hand. Shivam Dube played the first two balls dot, but he smashed the next ball for a boundary, leaving the Indian camp jubilant as they were just one run away from victory.

However, Lankan captain Charith Asalanka dismissed Dube on the fourth ball to bring an interesting twist to the game. When one run was needed, new man Arshdeep Singh tried to play a 'MS Dhoni' type shot to end things in style. Unfortunately, he failed to connect the ball and Asalanka managed to hit the batter's pad.

SLC says umpires failed to implement super over rule

Both teams were expected to play a Super Over to decide the winner, but the match officials confirmed that the match was a draw. Meanwhile, an official of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has confirmed that there was an option to conduct the Super Over in the first ODI as per ICC playing conditions.

It was later revealed that the match officials made an error by not enforcing the rule after the 50-over match ended in a tie. The umpires were thinking that the Super Over is played only when it is a tournament.

However, the law clearly states that if the scores of the teams are equal after the completion of both innings, a Super Over will be played. Meanwhile, an ICC official confirmed that the tiebreaker will enforced if the final ODI ends in a draw.
