Team India clinched the three-match ODI series versus England on Sunday after winning the second ODI in Cuttack. Skipper Rohit Sharma scored 119 off just 90 balls to spearhead the chase and also register his 32nd ODI ton in process. It was a crucial innings for Rohit after his prolonged run of bad form with the bat.
With this win, India have continued their unbeaten bilateral ODI series run against England. The win came in the 45th over with Ravindra Jadeja hitting Joe Root for a boundary through the covers. The final match of the series will be played on Wednesday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
It was England who won the toss and chose to bat first as the visitors made three changes to their side. Team India gave Varun Chakravarthy his ODI debut as he replaced Kuldeep Yadav while Yashasvi Jaiswal was replaced by Virat Kohli. After opting to bat first, England scored 304 from 49.5 overs.
Former skipper Joe Root led the batting charts with 69 off 72 balls while Ben Duckett scored 65 off 56 balls. Ravindra Jadeja dismissed both the set batters and also dismissed Jamie Overton for six runs in the final ball of his spell. The left-arm spinner picked three wickets from his ten overs and gave away only 35 runs.
Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill power India to easy win
Indian openers went on the leather hunt as they smashed the England bowlers to all parts of the ground. Rohit Sharma took just 30 balls to register his fifty while Gill got the mark in 45 balls. Having added 136 runs for the first wicket in 16.4 overs, Gill was out for 60 thanks to amazing yorker by Jamie Overton.
The next wicket to fall was that of Virat Kohli who was caught behind off Adil Rashid for just five runs. Shreyas Iyer joined his skipper as the pair added 70 runs for the third wicket with Rohit reaching his ton with a huge six. Liam Livingstone got the wicket of Rohit Sharma for 119 and Shreyas Iyer was soon run-out for 44.
KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya both scored ten runs but were out against the run of play. Axar Patel stayed not out on 41 off 43 balls with Ravindra Jadeja keeping him company on 11 not out as India secured the win with four wickets and 33 balls to spare.
