In-form India outmuscled England by a massive 142-run margin in the third and last ODI of the three-match series, played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. The visiting skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and asked the hosts to bat first. Batting first, India managed to post a big total of 356 runs in the allotted 50 overs.
Star India opener and vice-captain Shubman Gill continued his purple patch as he smashed a brilliant century, scoring 112 runs off 102 balls, with 14 fours and three sixes. He got vital support from former skipper and batting stalwart Virat Kohli star number four batter Shreyas Iyer.
Kohli and Iyer also contributed with the crucial half-centuries, scoring 52 and 78 runs off 55 and just 64 balls, respectively. Later in the middle order, wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul also came up with a crucial and quick cameo of 40 runs off just 29 balls, hitting three fours and a six.
On the back of these knocks, the men in blue posted a huge total of 356 runs, losing their all wickets in the allotted 50 overs.
The veteran leg-spinner Adil Rashid was one of the successful bowlers for England in the first innings, scalping 4 wickets in his 10-over spell. Besides him, Mark Wood also scalped 2 wickets, alongside Saqib Mahmood, Gus Atkinson, and Joe Root claiming a wicket each.
Another batting collapse crushes English hopes
While chasing the target, the tourists had a brilliant start from the openers, scoring 60 runs for the first wicket in just 6.2 overs. But it was also the time when England started losing the wickets in quick succession. Tom Banton and Gus Atkinson scored 38 runs each, which was the highest individual score for England in the second innings followed by Ben Duckett’s 34 runs off 22 balls.
Eventually, Indian the combined brilliance of the Indian bowlers bundled out the Three Lions at the score of just 214 runs in 34.2 overs and won the game for India by a huge margin of 142 runs to seal the three-match ODI series by a clean sweep margin of 3-0.
Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Axar Patel, and Hardik Pandya scalped 2 wickets each for India, alongside a wicket each bagged by Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav.
Vice-captain Shubman Gill was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his match-winning century in India’s favour. He also won the player of the series for scoring 259 runs in three innings, with two half-centuries and a century.
