Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost their fourth game in succession in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. Punjab Kings (PBKS) won the game by 18 runs thanks to a terrific tonne by Priyansh Arya in the first innings. The fans in attendance were seen waiting for MS Dhoni, who emerged to the ground to a huge round of applause.

On the final ball of the 16th over, Dhoni was nearly run out after a mix-up with Devon Conway. India’s former skipper got into his groove with the bat as he hit Lockie Ferguson for two sixes in the 18th over to keep Chennai in the hunt for an unlikely win. Fans were cheering wildly when Dhoni went after Arshdeep Singh and hit the left-arm seamer for 10 runs from two balls.

With 28 runs needed from six balls, Yash Thakur bowled from round the wicket and delivered a low full toss down the leg side. Dhoni tried to play the ball past the fine-leg fielder but Yuzvendra Chahal held onto a sharp catch. Dhoni was out after scoring 27 from just 12 balls with one boundary and three sixes. The cameras panned to a fan who was in tears seeing the former India and CSK skipper depart.

Punjab Kings gain key win over Chennai Super Kings by 18 runs

Chennai Super Kings had a mountain to climb as they needed to score 220 runs to win the game. It was a tough ask considering that Chennai hadn’t chased down a total over 180 since the 2021 season. Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway gave the team a great start with a stand of 61.

Glenn Maxwell had Ravindra stumped for 36 and then Ruturaj Gaikwad was back in the hut for one run. Shivam Dube came out to bat at number four and added 89 runs for the third wicket in 51 balls with Conway before being dismissed for 42 runs. Conway then scored his first fifty of the season and reached the mark in 36 balls. CSK decided to retire out Conway, who was on 69 off 49 balls with six boundaries and two sixes.

In the end, the target of 220 proved too much for CSK who fell short by 18 runs. With this win, Punjab Kings are now fourth in the table behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans, and Delhi Capitals on run-rate, PBKS next play Sunrisers Hyderabad on 12th April while Chennai Super Kings take on Kolkata at home on Friday.
