Former India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni’s retirement has been the hottest topic in the cricketing circles. The 43-year-old played yet another slow knock during his side’s 25-run loss to Delhi Capitals on Saturday. That loss also meant that CSK stumbled to the bottom two spots in the table in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.

Former Australian skipper and current Punjab Kings coach Ricky Ponting was asked about MS Dhoni’s future. Ponting was part of the Idea Exchange event and made huge comments while speaking to the Indian Express. The former Aussie skipper praised Dhoni’s sharp glove work, which has been evident during the IPL 2025 season.

The 50-year-old former Aussie star said, “Well, his keeping is not getting any worse, that is one thing I do know; he is not missing many standing up to the stumps against the spinners, as good as ever,”. While Dhoni is still one of the best wicketkeepers, it is his batting that has come under fire.

Speaking during the course of the event, Ponting was asked if Dhoni was still a potent force with the bat. PBKS coach replied, “Look, you are not going to argue with anything CSK do; they are one of the most successful teams in IPL history. They have had consistent coaching for a long time and generally make the right decisions. With the impact player rule now, Dhoni bats after other serious ball strikers within their own right,"

Ponting also said, “I guess he has played a slightly diminished role in the last couple of years, just coming in for the last 10–12 balls and trying to make a big impact. Dhoni is still dangerous in the IPL”.

Finally, when asked about MS Dhoni’s likely retirement at the end of the IPL 2025 season, Ponting said, “It might just depend on how this season goes. If he can have a real impact with the bat, I think he will keep playing. If his batting output drops, he might start thinking about it. He's been a terrific player for a long time,"
