Australian batter Steve Smith has stated his intention to play for Australia during the 2028 Olympics which are set to be played in Los Angeles. Cricket will make its presence felt in the T20 format and Smith at the age of 39 could be seen wielding the willow. Smith, scored an incredible 121 not out for Sydney Sixers during the Big Bash League (BBL) game on Saturday.
Speaking to Fox Sports, the 35-year-old said, “I’d like to play the Olympics, I reckon that would be cool. We’ll see how far I go in terms of long-form cricket. But I am going to play short-form cricket for a while I think when I do finish. You never know.”
The veteran Australian batter last played T20I cricket for Australia in February 2024. Poor run scorer meant that he wasn’t considered for selection for the T20 World Cup later that year. Even Indian Premier League (IPL) have snubbed Smith’s services in the past few auctions.
Steve Smith not looking at T20I recall for Australia
During the course of his chat with Fox Sports, Smith said that he wasn’t focused on getting a national T20I recall. The 35-year-old opined, “I haven’t really spoken about it (a recall). I am not really that fussed. I do what I do, enjoy coming back here playing for the Sixers and helping the team have success. I love the boys in that changeroom, it’s a good group, I have been involved for a long time.”
Australia are set to tour Sri Lanka in a few weeks and Smith has been named captain for the two-match Test series. The defending World Test Championship holders are set to face South Africa in the finals to be played in June. It is to be noted that Smith played a huge part in Australia regaining the Border Gavaskar Trophy against India recently.
Speaking about his knock against Perth Scorchers, Steve Smith said, “I had a bit of luck early, and then from there found some rhythm. But if I am playing T20s regularly I probably come out with a slightly different mindset at the start, give myself a bit more time and just play better cricket shots than a bit of the rogue stuff. I think that would come if I was playing consistently.”
