Pink Ball Test 2015 (Source - ESPN CRICINFO)
Australia and India are set to play the second Test match in Adelaide. According to reports, the ground has been sold out for the first day of the Pink Ball Test match starting on Friday. So far, there have been 12 Day and Night Test matches in Australia. The hosts have won 11 and lost one.
The first ever Day and Night Test match was played between Australia and New Zealand in 2015. Interestingly the game was played at the Adelaide Oval is the center for most day and night Test matches in the history of cricket. Brisbane, Perth, and Hobart too have hosted pink ball matches.
Australia beat India by 8 wickets in the only Day and Night Test between the two sides at this venue. The game lasted for just 2 and a half days as Tim Paine and his side took 1-0 lead in the series. Historically, Day and Night Test matches have been very short which is one of the reasons why BCCI doesn’t hold any more Pink ball games in India.
Has any Day and Night Pink ball game lasted all five days?
The first ever Pink ball game between Australia and New Zealand played at the Adelaide Oval lasted for three days. Twelve wickets fell on the first day while 13 more wickets fell on the second day. The 3rd day saw 12 more wickets fall as Australia won the match by 3 wickets to spare.
Year later the third Test between Australia and South Africa finished in Adelaide on the 4th day. Steve Smith’s side ran out winners by 7 wickets with batters dominating proceedings in the first two days. Gabba cricket ground in Brisbane hosted Pakistan for the Day and Night Test which lasted all five days as the hosts won by 39 runs.

Ashes got its first taste of pink ball matches when the Adelaide Test lasted all five days with Australia winning by 120 runs. In 2019, it took Australia just 2 and half days to beat Sri Lanka in Day and Night Test that was played in Brisbane. At the end of the same year, Adelaide hosted Pakistan and the game finished inside four days. David Warner scored 335 not out while Yasir Shah scored a gritty ton for the visitors.
Just a few weeks later, Perth hosted the 2nd Day and Night of the summer against New Zealand. Yet again the match failed to see all five days of action with Australia winning the game inside 4 days by 296 runs. Then came the famous Test against India in 2020 at Adelaide that ended inside three days with India being bowled out for 36.
Ashes 2021/22 saw two Day and Night matches being played. The first game in Adelaide last all five days with the hosts winning by 275 runs. Hobart then hosted the 2nd match of the series which Australia won by 146 runs and the game lasted just 2 and half days.
The same year West Indies played Australia in Adelaide as Pat Cummins and his side won by 419 runs. By the time the visitors were bowled out for 77 in the 2nd innings the game was over even before lunch. Shamar Joseph’s 7/68 handed Australia their first ever loss in Day and Night Test matches. The game ended on day four with West Indies winning by 8 runs to end their barren run in Australians soil.
