Indian Cricket star Shreyas Iyer’s future in the Test format has come under focus once more. According to a BCCI official, the 29-year-old isn’t in contention in the Test team’s plans. The move comes after Shreyas Iyer failed to perform during the Duleep Trophy 2024 tournament.

One unnamed BCCI official while speaking to The Telegraph said, “At the moment, there’s no room for Shreyas to be in the Test team. Who will he replace? Besides, his shot selection has been a concern in Duleep, especially on Sunday”

After getting out for a duck in the 1st innings, it seemed like Iyer was coming back to form. The 29-year-old played an ugly shot against Shams Mulani was bowled for 41 runs as his side lost the game on the final day.

Shreyas Iyer not likely to be picked for Australia series

One of the other areas of concern for Shreyas Iyer has been his failures against the Short Ball. Coupled with his bad form, his weakness against the short ball also is set to see Iyer miss out on the tour of Australia.

The BCCI official who spoke to The Telegraph said that the officials and team management weren’t pleased with Iyer’s shot selection. “He was well set and then suddenly played such a shot (off left-arm spinner Shams Mulani). When you are set and then batting on a flat deck, you need to make the best use of that opportunity.”

When asked if Iyer can make it back to the team for Australia series, the official stated that it was unlikely to happen. “Shreyas could be there in the Mumbai squad for the Irani Cup beginning on October 1st in Lucknow. Even if he’s picked for the Bangladesh T20Is from 6th October, he still might play Irani and then be available from the second T20I onwards.”

Another unnamed source went onto add, “Now, if he doesn’t fire in Irani too, he still has the Ranji Trophy to get runs. It wasn’t too many days ago when he was batting so well in last year’s ODI World Cup. He suffered an injury too, which needs to be considered.”

“Also, with still one round left in Duleep Trophy, you never know he might score a hundred. He needs to regain form. Most likely he won’t go to Australia for his problems against the short ball, but one can’t just ignore his runs at home.” added the BCCI source to The Telegraph.
