Sachin Tendulkar has broken a lot of records and made some as well. One of those is that he is the highest run-scorer in Test cricket and has played the most matches. Keeping this record in mind, former Australian batter Ricky Ponting feels that England's Joe Root can break Sachin's record for most runs in red-ball cricket.

Root is an incredible player, and his strokeplay is stunning. Watching him play all the bookish shots makes the game even more exciting and beautiful. The stylish batter is just 3000 runs away from breaking the record set by the legendary Tendulkar.

So, Ponting said in the latest episode of The ICC Review, "He is 33 years of age (more than) 3,000 runs behind. It depends on how many Test matches they play, but if they're playing 10 to 14 Test matches a year, and if you're scoring 800 to 1,000 runs a year, then that sort of says he's only three or four years off getting there. So that'll take him to 37 (years of age)."

The analysis made by Ponting isn't wrong since Root is a remarkable player, and his fitness is also good, which means that he can play as much as he wants to. In the series against West Indies, Root crossed the 12000-run mark overall and has become the seventh-highest run-getter in red-ball cricket.

It's been his conversion rates being the big thing: Ricky Ponting

As Ponting rightly pointed out, one of the best things about Joe Root is that it became quite evident as to why he thinks the batter can break a massive record. Root is not someone who gets out in the late 80s or 90s; rather, he converts his half-centuries into big scores most of the time. He's a responsible player and can become the highest run-scorer in the upcoming times.

"It's been his conversion rates being the big thing. Four or five years ago, he was making a lot of 50s and struggling to go on and make hundreds, and he's gone the other way recently. Almost every time he gets to 50 now, he goes on and makes a big hundred. So that's been the real turnaround for him," added Ponting.
